In the small town of Blaenavon, a war widow called Mrs Joyce O’Keefe, lived at number 8 Cross Street which was a small cottage in a nice quiet area. Her husband, Edward, had been dead for a while, so, early in the year of 1924, Mrs O’Keefe made it known that she was prepared to take in a lodger. Money was short and her several daughters were all now married and living in other parts of Wales.

Eventually, a young man knocked the door and told Joyce that he was looking for accommodation. His name was Alexander Lewis. He was twenty-eight-years-old, a works labourer and a native of Leominster. Joyce put the kettle on and the two chatted away over a cup of tea. He seemed nice enough so Joyce agreed that Alexander could become her lodger.
